RelaxGarden - Japan in Vienna
In December 2018, London-Tokyo-based fashion designer Shinya Abe opened the first Vienna branch of his RelaxGarden label. In the Vienna shop on Neubaugasse seasonal pop-up photography exhibitions and art events are going hand in hand with Shinya Abe’s fashion:
In 2004, Shinya Abe launched "RelaxGarden" London Shoreditch, the first concept store specializing in Japanese indie fashion labels in the hip district of East London.
Through Abe's carefully selected combination of labels and unerring style, the concept store quickly became a hot spot for young Japanese fashion design, attracting prestigious customers such as Keira Knightley and Alexa Chung as well as other local artists.
With the collections by Shinya Abe, RelaxGarden fast became a fashion label in its own right. Today RelaxGarden is also at home in Vienna and a combination of both: Shinya Abe's fashion and selected models and accessories from other Japanese and South Korean indie labels. The matching accessories are part of the concept - in order to find them, Shinya Abe travels to South Korea and Japan to research small, independent designers.
The Japanese fashion designer comes from a family that has been known for generations far beyond the Japanese borders for the production of the highest quality silk fabrics and produces complex textiles for international, renowned fashion houses also today - a theme that Abe can still relate with:
"For me, fashion is a holistic work of art that is constantly changing. The challenge is to use reduction in a targeted creative way while at the same time paying attention to special details that take the complexity of our environment into account.
‘I recently spent a weekend in Vienna and was delighted to pick up a copy of your City Guide for Fashion & Design which I found really useful as I am from London/Dublin. I did not have much time in Vienna so I loved your recommendations as I always try to find local designers when I travel. I enjoyed your colour coding different parts of the city and your support of local designers.
Best wishes and I am already looking forward to your next edition and my next trip to Vienna.’
